Sulphur soap is recommended for various skin conditions like acne, seborrheic dermatitis and rosacea. This soap smelled quite awful in the beginning, but in time it faded... a secret of making sulphur soap is not to use too much, a teaspoon for 500 grams of oils is enough. Because at higher concentrations it can be too harsh on the skin.

Eu am folosit o linguriță de sulf la 500 grame uleiuri. Sulful trebuie să fie pur, grad farmaceutic si daca se poate sub formă de praf, astfel încât să se disperseze foarte bine în pasta de săpun. Eu l-am adăugat la trace pentru că nu este solubil și nici nu se dispersează în apă, rămânând adunat sub formă de bulgări.]

beeswax as an emulsifier: does it work?
I've been long hearing that beeswax is not an emulsifier and no matter what you do or how you do it, a two-phase cream or lotion made with only beeswax as emulsifier will not hold and sooner or later it will separate.
On the other hand, the Internet is full of recipes and success stories of lotions emulsified with only beeswax. So I definitely wanted to give it a try. Knowing that almost all emulsifiers are esters, and that beeswax has an interesting profile of mostly esters... it is only logic that a lotion made with some beeswax should be able to hold some water.
At first I tried the regular method of emulsification by combining the two phases at 70 degrees C and mixing thoroughly for some minutes. It was an epic fail.
After some more research I found out why. Indeed, beeswax is not a true emulsifier, not in the sense that it contains molecules that have an lipophilic head and a hydrophilic tail (or is it vice-versa?) But due to the consistency it gives, one should be capable of incorporating water slowly in oils and beeswax mixtures, like making a mayonnaise. It is in fact a mechanical emulsion, and not a chemical one.
Now, in time, all emulsions will separate. The problem is how much time. Due to the fact that a beeswax emulsion is mechanical, it is more likely to separate sooner rather than later. But I need to see for myself.
Here is a first recipe I managed to complete with beeswax as emulsifier:
Oil phase:
- 2.5 grams beeswax
- 12.5 grams shea butter (raw)
- 10 grams marigold oil
Water phase:
- 5 grams aloe vera gel
- 10 grams distilled water
Final phase:
- 5 drops antimicrobial agent, your choice. I used Cosgard
The secret of success with mechanical emulsions is the preparation method. Weight together the oil phase in a Berzelius glass. Place over heat, in a water container (bain-marie). When the final beeswax pieces are melted, take away from heat and let it cool down until it becomes a semi-liquid jelly.
At this point, start mixing. With a pipette start adding the water phase, slowly. Continue mixing at all time. When the mixer doesn't work due to viscosity, mix manually, with a spatula. At the end, ad the preservative.
That's it :)
How does it feel on skin? It's a bit sticky at first, and a bit oily, but is well absorbed soon enough. In what concerns me, I wouldn't trade my regular creams for this one unless on very, very dry skin areas or for dermatological problems that render very sensitive skin. But this journey is only at the beginning. I still have to see how long this emulsion will hold together. Will let you know! :)
Update: Unfortunatelly, small drops of water separated only 3 days later after preparing this cream. The search continues. :)

Ulei Anti-Insecte

Sunt foarte multe variante simple de retete pe care ni le putem prepara acasa pentru a tine la distanta de pe pielea noastra si a celor mici insectele nedorite. Un astfel de amestec poate contine un ulei de baza (solventul) - eu am folosit 40 de grame ulei de orez pentru ca este un ulei usor si cu o compozitie unica de fitosteroli cum ar fi orizanolul si acidul ferulic - si un amestec de uleiuri esentiale sau uleiuri vegetale active.
Astfel, reteta mea s-a imbogatit cu:
- ulei de neem - 10 grame
- ulei esential de geraniu - 30 picaturi
- ulei esential de lavanda - 30 picaturi
- ulei esential de cedru de virginia - 15 picaturi
- ulei esential de tea-tree - 10 picaturi
Voi ce active eficiente ati gasit impotriva tantarilor si altor insecte?

Lavorator # 5 - Prepararea unui sampon
Duminica, 17 mai, de la ora 13:00, va astept la Maya Concept. La ceainarit, la un nou Lavorator. Evenimentul de pe Facebook il puteti gasi aici, iar formularul de inscriere aici.
Ce vom face:
- Vom vorbi despre tenside: ce sunt, de cate feluri, ce rol indeplineste fiecare si cum le putem combina astfel incat sa obtinem un produs potrivit pentru parul nostru.
- Vom invata cum sa ne cream singuri o reteta de sampon.
- Vom face un sampon impreuna, lucrand pe grupuri astfel incat fiecare participant sa se poata implica practic.
Va asteptam cu drag! :)

Noutăți/New stuff
Hydrating and refreshing lotion for your feet (cremă emolientă și răcoritoare pentru tălpi). Observați ușoara nuanță albastră - o urmă de pigment mineral ultramarine (CI 77007), pentru că la picioare ne permitem un mic exces estetic. Cu uleiuri esentiale răcoritoare de mentă, lavandă și eucalipt, cu nelipsitele emoliente (unt de shea, lanolină) și hidratante (glicerină, uree) și un emulsifiant special pentru emulsii hidratante cu texturi foarte plăcute - sucrose stearate.
Cleanser cremos cu sodium coco sulfate, o tensidă solidă versatilă din care se pot face atât șampoane solide cât și șampoane gel sau cleansere. După o rețetă furnizată de Anca A. (Din păcate nu vă pot da link, pentru că Anca nu are momentan unul).
Săpun delicios pentru copilași și nu numai, cu ceară de albine, miere, și absolut de vanilie. Culoarea închisă se datorează vanilinei. În noile forme cu albinuțe :)
Ulei uscat pentru contur de ochi, cu active antirid și antiiritante.
Și un caiet de rețete minunat, handmade, cadou de la Delia S., pe care abia acum m-am îndurat să-l încep.
În afară de caiețel bineînțeles, produsele au fost vândute la bazarul solidar RomSoft, iar bănuții donați în totalitate pentru Fondul Științescu! Mulțumiri colegilor, cu ajutorul cărora am mobilizat și eu o mică sumă pentru acest proiect. :)
